It’s that time of year when “best of” lists start showing up everywhere for all kinds of things. My Twitter feed is stuffed with “Best of 2015” TV shows and movie lists from IMDB to individual critics, and everyone in between. It seems everyone has an opinion, so of course I’m adding mine as well.
I’ll be doing a little two week hiatus from my blog while I spend time with family over the holidays, so I thought I would do my final post of 2015 with my “favorites” of the year, as I find “best” to be a little too subjective.
Without further ado…here are my favorite:
To be honest, there are a lot of great films coming in at the end of 2015 that I haven’t had a chance to see yet (Spotlight, Brooklyn, Room, The Big Short, Creed, etc.), so I’m sure this list would be a little different if I had a chance to screen those first, but these are the movies I loved this year in the following categories:
Action: Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Adventure: The Martian
Animation: Inside Out
Crime Drama: Sicario
Drama: The End of the Tour
Sci-fi/Fantasy: Tomorrowland, Jurassic World
Thriller: The Gift
Glee – This show had a lot of ups and downs over the years, and subtlety was certainly never its strong suit, but the short final season was a great send off and the finale was inspiring.
Game of Thrones – This show is always great, but this season in particular was just non-stop “WTF?!”. I still can’t talk about that heart-stopping finale.
The Flash – Stellar cast, great writing, and a good dose of “not taking ourselves too seriously”.
The Americans – Again, always a fascinating, well-acted show, but this season built up to a moment that’s been a long time coming. I can’t wait to see where this spy family goes from here.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – I’ve never been a big fan of Ellie Kemper…until this very funny show. A worthy binge, with a “can’t-get-it-out-of-my-head” theme song, and a hilarious cast.
Agent Carter – I love strong female roles, and this 8-episode show delivered.
Outlander – Great chemistry with the leads, and some of the steamiest scenes on TV.
Daredevil – A gritty, dark binge that improves upon the film and feels like it belongs more in Christopher Nolan’s superhero world.
iZombie – My “fangirl” show–snarky and fun–great writing and a cast that looks like they’re having too much fun.
Some shows I’m looking forward to catching up on from this year: Unreal, Flesh and Bone, Jessica Jones, The Man in the High Castle, and the much-buzzed about You’re the Worst, which is technically from 2014.
The Royal We by Heather Cocks and Jessica Morgan
The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
I read a lot of older novels this year, but of the books published in 2015, these two were stand outs. Both will be coming to the big screen soon, so hurry and read if you haven’t already!
Like a lot of people, I pretty much lived on Taylor Swift’s 1989 album and I’m obsessing over Adele’s 25, but these are the other singles I danced to in my kitchen…or car…
Carly Rae Jepsen – I Really Like You
Justin Bieber – What Do You Mean?
Florence + the Machine – Ship To Wreck
Jess Glynne – Hold My Hand
Jason Derulo – Want to Want Me
Flo Rida – GDFR
Soundtracks: Fifty Shades of Grey, Paper Towns
I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season and I’ll see you in 2016!
