Thoughts on two new HBO shows that debuted last night:
Divorce (Comedy) – Watch. This dark comedy covers a difficult topic, with two not very likable people, but it still has its moments. I’m a long time Sarah Jessica Parker fan (seriously, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Footloose up through her perfect Carrie Bradshaw on Sex and the City), and I found her just as fascinating on this show, but Thomas Haden Church is a little grating in this particular role. (His bored gruffness works for some characters, but it’s over the top here.) It’s only thirty minutes, so I’ll keep watching for now, but I think this one is going to be a slow burn. (Side note: I want all of SJP’s coats on this show. All of them.)
Insecure (Comedy) – Watch! I’m over thirty, so I wasn’t familiar with Issa Rae’s web series, but man, she is awesome. I’d watch just for her hilarious raps, but there’s plenty more to this show than that. I thought it was a fresh perspective on late-twenties life, and the writing is clever as hell–there were so many great lines in the pilot, I couldn’t keep up.
