Beach Binge

I just got back from my first beach vacation in almost a decade, and it was pure bliss. We only had 2 1/2 days of beach time, but I didn’t care; even the overcast, rainy days led to lazy, reading afternoons and fun putt-putt outings. Plus: seafood. Finally! It’s been years since I’ve had fresh shrimp and scallops…and the southern beach staple: hush puppies.

I went to Myrtle Beach, a vacation spot I’ve been to a few times since I was a kid, and one of the most famous beaches on the Grand Strand (aka, the “Riviera of the South”). Having lived on both coasts, I still prefer the wide, sandy beaches of South Carolina to the Cali surfers and rocky coast. (Although, nothing beats the view as you drive up the PCH to Malibu…and I can practically still taste the Shrimp & Fries from Malibu Seafood.)

Myrtle Beach also happens to be the setting of the fantastic ’80s beach movie, Shag: The Movie. (I just got nostalgic for the film and checked Amazon…it sells for $34.99 to $94.97! Clearly I will need to track this down in a bargain bin somewhere.) Since I can’t watch that film right now, I thought I’d put together my beach movie list. Crack a beer, whip up a Hurricane, or pour yourself a margarita and enjoy one of these on a beach towel in your living room!

  • Shag (1989)
  • Satisfaction (1988) (These top two make an excellent girls night!)
  • Cocktail (1988)
  • Beaches (1988)
  • Into the Blue (2005) Jessica Alba is #bikinigoals
  • Point Break (1991)
  • Blue Crush (2002)
  • Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
  • Weekend at Bernie’s (1989)
  • Cast Away (2000) Even though he ends up at the beach unintentionally…
And maybe don’t go in the water right after watching these:
  • Jaws (1975)
  • The Shallows (2016)
  • Open Water (2003)
  • The Beach (2000)

Which brings me to the trailer of the week: 47 Meters Down.

Summer is almost here, y’all!!
